Are Video Games Killing Humanity?

Are Video games killing humanity?

Are video games killing humanity? In the essay “Just One More Game written by Sam Anderson, he analyzed “stupid games” and suggested that they may be a good thing for humanity. Anderson describe “stupid games” as the hyper addictive games most of us play on our smartphones. Many people have read that video games encourage violence and increase a gamer’s risk for obesity. In some instances, this is true I believe that it depends on the person. Anderson thought that if people could apply gaming to their everyday lives, they may be happier and more successful.

Throughout the essay Anderson Refers other specialists or professionals to support his thesis. Anderson brings up many facts and statistics, as much about the history as well as the companies who try to hook consumers on their games. Using this strategy throughout the entire text creates a constant and perpetual state of reassurance. Anderson uses facts and arguments that incite the reader to believe that his statement is the only possibility. If it were not for the release of the iPhone, Angry Birds would most likely not exist.

There are, however, people who disagree with Anderson’s hypotheses. Take for instance, Jane McGonigal’s (on page sixty-seven’s second-to-last paragraph). In her book ‘Reality Is Broken’, Jane McGonigal argues that play is possibly the best, healthiest, most productive activity a human can undertake- a gateway to our ideal psychological state. Games aren’t an escape from reality, McGonigal contends, they are an optimal form of engaging it. Being that there are various opinions and theories. I believe that it depends on the person.

This article is about video Games and Youth Violence. The potential influence of violent video games on youth violence remains an issue of concern for psychologists, policymakers and the general public. Although several prospective studies of video game violence effects have been conducted, none have employed well validated measures of youth violence, nor considered video game violence effects in context with other influences on youth violence such as family environment, peer delinquency, and depressive symptoms.

This article is about video games being harmful to kids. Youngsters and teen-agers, but there’s a fair number of older folks who enjoy conquering monsters, aliens or enemies inhabiting a computer-screen world. Is there anything wrong with what they’re doing? Experts say probably not. In fact, they say, video game players may reap certain benefits from playing, if it’s not excessive. “It takes a lot of effort for eyes which are best suited for seeing at a distance to maintain focus at near distances,” according to a statement by the American Optometric Association. The Association suggested resting your eyes after every 30 minutes of play.

This article is about not all video games being harmful. There’s mounting data that specially designed video games (known as “serious games”) can increase knowledge and change behavior in youth. They can have a positive influence on the way kids think and act about their health. That’s good news because 97 percent of young Americans play computer, Internet, mobile or console games, and 50 percent play daily.

This article discuses Harmful, violent video games. The debate over graphic video games and violence has continued for years, but the results of studies are mixed. One study concluded that exposure to violent video games and other forms of media violence constitutes a significant risk factor for later aggressive and violent behavior. Another study found that video games do not affect all children in the same way.

Do Words Have a meaning after They are Said?

When someone says something to a person many people may think that is that. From another perspective people may agree with the poet and think that it is born that day. Many may think if so, “what makes it breathe and live?” Sometimes we may tend to replay in our minds what someone has written or said to us. The words have a life far beyond what the speaker or writer had in mind. In “a word is dead” in my opinion is a woman named Emily Dickinson who was not popular. She wrote poems but very little knew about them. After her passing her family helped her work become famous. I believe that this poem was written to explain to the reader that some words people say or write, may stick with the one who is listening or reading after they are gone.

I agree with what her poem is saying. In lines four through six the poem says; “I say it just Begins to live That day.” Weather it’s a compliment an insult or even a catchphrase depending on who is said to determines if it will be remembered. There are many people deceased and alive their words whatever the circumstances may be will have an everlasting effect. The words depend on the background, on the speakers or on the way to express it. On one side the reader may think the word is spoken, it came out of my mouth and as soon as the sound fades, it is gone. On the other side the reader may think by saying a word, I send it in the universe, and it starts its own life. Now other people hear it and can use it as well.

The poem seems to be a dialogue between two different viewpoints about the word’s life. The reader may ask what the correct opinion may be. It is safe to say that not all words are dead after they are said. If the word is random or out of the blue, it has no meaning. When the person finishes saying the word, the sound is gone and the word “dies.” Some words, it seems, die quietly, of plain old age and disuse. Many of Dickinson’s poems did not have title so many were the first words of the poem. I believe that this poem was written to explain to the reader that some words people say or write, may stick with the one who is listening or reading after they are gone.

Have Comic Books Evolved Over the Years?

There have been those kids who keeps comic books from the popular franchises DC and Marvel. Through the years there have been dramatic changes in the way comic books are designed. Many readers enjoy the new comics it helps them relive their childhood, however many parents do not want their kids to read them. Comic books in the 50’s to early 60’s were very bright and in the end of the comic the hero always prevails. Comic books from the 90’s till now are very dark and depressing where the hero may defeat the villain, but the hero may die. In Michael Chabon’s proposal named “Kids Stuff” Chabon argues that comic books are not as kid friendly as they used to be. Comic books should be read more because when kids have lower self-esteem because they aren’t strong readers that can discourage them from wanting to read. But graphic novels are a great way to promote literacy.

Chabon reflects on his childhood comic book, stating that comic books “are not aimed for children anymore”. Many agree with Chabon’s proposal. If comics today are no longer aimed towards children, then why would they have an interest in reading them? Chabon states that, “comics are to a wider and older audience than ever before.” (913) In the proposal Chabon contrasts two different comic book covers. The cover on the left (914) is a modern-day Batman cover. The cover to the right (915) is a Batman cover from his childhood. Chabon offers this contrast to illustrate for the reader the difference on the two comics.

New and improved technology may have a small impact on whether a child picks up a comic book, but many believe the content of newer comic books is what is driving children away. Many readers may think the reasoning on why Michael Chabon wrote this article is that he has a very large passion for comic books, which he has had all his life, and he would just like to see children enjoy reading comics today just as he did. For example, in the proposal Chabon states that “Children did not abandon comics; comics, in their drive to attain respect and artistic accomplishment, abandoned children.”

Michael Chabon made some very good points about comics in his article.  He believes that if an author took a different approach and created a comic book to a younger audience, then the chances of a kid picking up a comic book and reading it for his or her own pleasure would increase. He thinks that kids would still find comics interesting.  Chabon mentions his 10-year-old son liking comics now, and how important comics are to himself as well. Comic books are rarely bought by young kids now, they more less play video games then purchase and read comic books. Comic books should be read more because when kids have lower self-esteem because they aren’t strong readers that can discourage them from wanting to read. But graphic novels are a great way to promote literacy.

My football Life

There are many aspects of my life, but the one that is the most intriguing is football. I played football for ten years and loved every second of it. Weather it was the long blazing hot summer work-out days or the freezing cold winter night games. Football has helped me become the man I am today. I have had many coaches that have influenced and impacted my life in a major way. Not only have my coaches impacted and supported me, but my family has as well. Along with the many awards I earned, I also gained a bond and friendship with my teammates and coaching staff. I plan on attempting to play football at Western Carolina University.
